Musical Director:- GEOF BENSON
Making good music whilst having fun, is the ethos of the Pleasley Band Musical Director, Geof Benson.
An accomplished Euphonium / Baritone player for many years, Geof has gained most of his knowledge from playing under,
listening and learning from some of the top Brass Conductors over the years.
A vastly experienced bandsman, Geof has played at all levels in banding from Championship to Fourth section,
playing and performing on most of the instruments within a brass band.
Geof had great times playing with Thoresby Colliery, and Ransome & Marles Bands within the Championship section,
but special memories gained when ‘giving back’ to the banding world, playing with younger bandsmen of Shirland Training and Thoresby Youth Bands.
Geof has been with Pleasley Colliery Welfare Band since March 2014 and soon gained the band promotion to the
3rd Section in 2016. The band were crowned 3rd Section Midlands Champions that same year and enjoyed a second consecutive trip to the National
Finals at Cheltenham. With continued success at the Midland Area competitions, the band have now gained further promotion to the Second Section
as from January 2023.
Geof has taken on Pleasley Training Band and started a Gold, Silver and Bronze award scheme of learning that
has enthused the beginners into wanting to achieve quicker. After players have achieved the Gold award, Geof then knows they are technically
and theoretically ready to join the senior ranks. Giving back and training beginners is Geof’s way to try to ensure a secure future for Pleasley Band.
